The Pt. Loma/Cabrillo Tennis Club (PLCTC) started back in the late ‘70s after California’s Proposition 13 was passed. That legislation severely cut back the property tax base that supported public facilities and programs, forcing the City of San Diego to relinquish many of its park and recreational services…such as maintenance of public tennis courts. The City offered to let neighborhood organizations take over administration of the courts rather than let the courts go completely unattended. The teaching pro at Cabrillo Recreation center, Robin Reedy, approached Michal Moser about starting a tennis club to maintain the courts, thus the PLCTC was formed. We became a non-profit public benefit corporation back in 1985; in 1988 we applied for and received federal tax exemption for the club by proving that we were non-profit; and in 1990 we attained retroactive state exemption for the club when they wanted to charge us taxes of $600/yr.
The PLCTC is governed by a 4 person board of directors plus the appointed standing committee chairpersons. Our officers include President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The standing committees are; facilities, newsletter, and pickleball coordinator. All club officers and committee chairpersons serve as volunteers in order to maximize club funds available to maintain the 6 courts.
Club funds are used for maintenance (court resurfacing and cleaning) and equipment replacement, as well as liability insurance under a yearly “umbrella” policy with other public clubs in the City. We are charged for this insurance on a per court basis.
Robin Reedy was our official tennis instructor from the start until she retired to do other great things in the Summer of 1995. Early on, we decided to designate the Cabrillo courts as our teaching courts, leaving the firestation courts for open play. The 2 courts at the Cabrillo Elementary school/Cabrillo Recreation center complex are kept locked to ensure school security. And during school hours the elementary school has priority for their use. These 2 courts are over 70 years old and require frequent resurfacing.
